Specimen Report Worksheet Directions

Your ID number:  Each animal is required to have a unique ID at the institution where it is registered.  ISIS recommends a simple numeric system without leading zeros.  Although the latest version of ARKS will accept up to eight characters, it is recommended only six characters be used for compatibility with other older programs.  If your organization is a member of ISIS, you only have to make certain the ID you assign is not duplicated elsewhere in your institution.

In the event you are ultimately submitting data through a parent member organization, you should take additional precautions to insure unique ID’s.  For example, assume the fictitious Citron Cockatoo Society wished to submit data under the IAS umbrella membership.  By mutual agreement, the Citron Cockatoo Society might prefix all their IDs with CS (i.e. CS1, CS2, CS3, CS4, etc.).  No other specialty society submitting data under the IAS membership would use the same ID.  Perhaps AFA has a less cumbersome procedure.

ARKS will not allow you to change your ID number without reentering all of the data on the animal.  To avoid reentry, please determine your ID system in advance.

Taxonomic name:   Up to 35 characters allowed (in Arks4, this there’s no particular limit, the taxonomic list will use however many characters are necessary).  ARKS matches the scientific name you enter to a 20 plus Meg database.  Would suggest the taxonomic name be entered to lowest degree of subspecies or type known without guessing.  (Example: Cacatua sulphurea citrinocrista).  If needed, you could add additional information in notes.

Hybrid:   Circle the appropriate choice.

Birth Date:  Enter the appropriate date if known.  If there is some degree of uncertainty, enter  (for example), ~July 1989 or  ~1965)

Birth Type Circle the appropriate choice..

Birth Location __________ (ISIS Institution Mnemonic or Private or Unknown )  If using Private or Unknown, put whatever details are known into Special Comments.

Sire ID ___________ at __________ (Institution)

Dam ID __________ at __________ (Institution

If the animals do not have Ids, use House Names, bands, or anything else that could identify the animal. You may also use “Wild” or UNK.

Sex: Circle the appropriate choice.

Rearing: Circle the appropriate choice/choices.

If the bird was captive raised from birth at your facility as indicated above, the following "initial acquisition" section would not be pertinent.

Transfer to: _________ (Institution).  Their ID is __________ (Enter their local ID).  Institution and ID formats as previous.

Acquisition Notes & History:  ARKS has the capability for storing considerable data.  There is capability for acquisition notes, disposition notes, reproduction notes in addition to fields for measurements such as weights and lengths.  In short, if ARKS does not have a special memo field of the type you desire, you may create your own.  Please see Scode table below.

Eggs:  There is an egg database program available (for Sparks and Arks3.)

The following may be confusing and is not needed for data collection.  We were asked to provide some of the field characteristics for compatibility with those who choose to use their own databases.  The following is for the programmers and may be disregarded by others.  Again it is only for informational purposes only and not needed for specimen data collection.  If it is confusing, please disregard.
