Avian Research Projects Funded

Contributions for Avian Research have been spent primarily in antimicrobial, viral and vaccine development for the benefit of many avian species. Conservation dollars have been targeted towards work with threatened or endangered parrots.

Proceeds from our 1995 Convention were distributed as follows:

North Carolina State University, Dr. Keven Flammer, Antimicrobial Research - $7,000

University of Georgia, Dr. Branson Ritchie, Viral and Vaccine Research - $7,000

Conservation Breeding Specialist Group - $2,000

For futher information on the important work this group has done, the reader is referred to the 600 plus pages of the Parrot Captive Management Workshop Reference Manuals distributed at the 1994 Convention to participants.

Fundaves, Dr. Kim Joyner, Guatamala - $1,050 (directed donation)

Alex Foundation, Dr. Irene Pepperberg - $1,000 (directed donation)

Alex Foundation, Field Study - African Grey Parrots in Central African Republic - $2000

An Additional $12,000 was placed in Escrow for Conservation Projects pending futher information and review before final allocation by the BOD.

Captive Breeding Specialist Group - $2,000

World Parrot Trust - USA (WPT)

- A total of $13,000; $5,000 for the Lear's Macaw project in Brazil, $2,000 to the project "Parrots in Peril - in Ecuador" (an expedition which aims to increase the protection provided for three endangered parrot species in the Podocarpus National Park in Ecuador). Other Projects funded included: Buffon's Macaws (Ara ambigua guaguilensis), $3000; Blue-throated Macaws (Ara glaucogularis), $3000; and A Rescue and Release Program: Friends of Portobelo National Park, Panama, $1010.

Contributions totaling $2,325.00 were received in memory of Mr. Richard Schubot. These funds were allocated to the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine for work by Dr. Branson Ritchie on viral diseases and vaccine research.
