Caloosahatchee Aviary and Botanical Garden (a.k.a. The Funny Farm) is located on 38 acres in a remote area of Southwest Florida. CABG is a very private facility and the home of Luanne and Richard Porter. The Porter aviaries (the Funny Farm) were formerly in Memphis, Tennessee. They have successfully raised several hundred parrots over the years. They began moving to their present location in Southwest Florida in July 1996. Luanne and Richard Porter are Founder Board Members of the International Aviculturists Society.
The flock at CABG has undergone periodic veterinary inspection by Dr. Branson Ritchie from the University of Georgia. The flock has been tested and found to be negative for Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD). The flock has received regular vaccinations for Polyomavirus. There has been no evidence of Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD) or Psittacosis in the flock. Birds are routinely implanted with microchips. New birds coming into the facility undergo an extensive veterinarian exam and extended quarantine period. Most birds have undergone chromosomal analysis (Avian Genetics Laboratory)
CABG works with a number of parrot species. Unfortunately for security reasons, the privacy of our breeders, and protection of our flock from introduced disease, we cannot allow visitors. The Funny Farm raises a limited number of breeder and companion birds available to qualified homes.
Galapagos tortoises (Geochelone nigra) are provided sanctuary at CABG. Babies surplus to our breeding program may be occasionally available to qualified reptile enthusiasts. A captive bred wildlife permit is required to transport Geochelone nigra outside of the state of Florida.
