Since initiating our move from Tennessee to Florida in 1996, many changes have transpired. While in Tennessee, along with our attempts to raise our family, our multitude of creatures expanded. Each day brought new opportunities, trials and tribulations. The Memphis frigid winters necessitated winter indoor housing with an associated suboptimal breeding season. When the time came for children to leave the nest, college bound, we relocated our breeding facility to Southwest Florida!
Daily routines and chores have not changed significantly since our move. The animals still come first each morning; however, our interests have expanded. With our year round warm climate our passions have grown. We endeavor to provide as natural a surrounding as possible for the creatures under our care. Our interests include native Florida plants, tropical fruit trees, palms, orchids, bromeliads, hibiscus, and yes, virtually any plant with a blooming profusion of color or edible bird fruit. We are working towards providing our animals their own tropical paradise!
The nearby beautiful Caloosahatchee River prompted us to a name our facility Caloosahatchee Aviary and Botanical Gardens. The Funny Farm remains our division for marketing premium companion birds for the discriminating enthusiast. Overproduction of "assembly-line" produced, non-vaccinated, ill, and poorly socialized chicks by others have flooded the companion bird market. We do not wish to contribute to this disaster and have seriously curtailed our breeding program for the companion bird market. Many pairs, especially of endangered species, are allowed to raise and fledge their young for future breeder stock. Our breedings are limited and arranged as we wish to make certain any companion birds we produce go only to appropriate homes. We do not want to contribute to the unwanted, maladjusted parrot glut. Although we do provide sanctuary for a number of elderly and commercially undesirable parrots, we do not consider ourselves a primary rescue facility.
At CABG and the Funny Farm, every effort is made to provide healthy, well socialized companion parrots. Whether babies are incubator or parent hatched, each chick is carefully monitored during its development. Babies are closed banded. Microchip implant service is recommended and is available on request (We implant all of our adults for permanent identification and security purposes). All babies are vaccinated for polyomavirus prior to leaving our facility. Babies are sexed before leaving our facility. Some chicks are parent fledged; others are hand reared.
We prefer not to sell unweaned babies, but will consider sales to qualified purchasers after the babies have been polyomavirus vaccinated. No baby will be shipped while still being syringe fed. For additional information on some of the precautions and steps taken to insure the health of these babies, their parents, and the rest of the flock, please see "Preventative Measures" taken at the Quality Standards Page.
The Funny Farm is that division of Caloosahatchee Aviary and Botanical Garden which provides premium companion birds to appropriate homes. For further information on babies currently being handfed, please see our current Babies page. For further information regarding some of the steps we take to insure the health and well being of youngsters leaving our facility, please call or see the Quality Standards Page. Contact Luanne regarding the ongoing socialization of these special babies. It will become obvious where these youngsters pick up their "Southern Accent".
Thank you!
